British Museum Icons 2009 Wall Calendar: Icons are religious images used as tools of worship in Orthodox and Byzantine churches and are among the purest and most compelling forms of early Christian devotional art. Dating from the 14th through to the 19th centuries, the 12 icons reproduced in this calendar are painted panels that were created for installation in churches or for private prayer at home. All are from the British Museum's collection of 100 Byzantine, Greek and Russian painted wood icons maintained as documents of a living culture. A beautiful and unusual calendar for 2009.
